Our Mission
Communication in Science exists to help researchers, clinicians, and public health professionals share their findings with the world. We believe that language should never be a barrier to the dissemination of scientific knowledge — and that every piece of rigorous research deserves the chance to be published, read, and acted upon.
Our Approach
Good scientific writing is not simply about grammar. It is about clarity of thought, logical argument, and precise expression. Our work is built on the conviction that writing skills can be taught and learned, and that researchers who receive the right support can transform how they communicate — with lasting benefit to their careers and to the communities they serve.
We draw on established frameworks in scientific communication, adapted to the realities of research in low- and middle-income settings. Our training is practical, grounded in real manuscripts and real journals, and respectful of the diverse writing traditions our clients bring to their work.
What We Do
We provide three complementary services:
- Workshops — structured training sessions, delivered in person or online, for individuals or groups at any career stage
- Editing Services — language and structural editing of manuscripts, grant applications, and technical documents
- Online Tutorials — self-paced modules covering every element of a scientific paper and the publishing process
Who We Work With
We work with researchers at all career stages, from graduate students preparing their first paper to senior scientists seeking to publish in high-impact journals. Our clients work across a wide range of fields, including:
- Infectious disease and epidemiology
- Global health and health systems research
- Clinical medicine and nursing
- Public health, health policy, and health promotion
- Nutrition, environmental health, and One Health
Where We Work
CIS has delivered workshops and provided editing support to researchers at universities, research institutes, schools of public health, ministries of health, and international organisations across Africa, Asia, and Europe.
Who We Are
CIS was founded by Jonathan Polonsky, a biomedical writer and trainer with a background in epidemiology and global health. Jonathan holds advanced degrees in public health and has spent many years supporting researchers in low- and middle-income countries to publish their work in peer-reviewed international journals.
He has collaborated with WHO, MSF, national ministries of health, and a range of academic institutions, and brings both editorial rigour and field experience to every engagement.
